Q: When is YPMD III?
A: YPMD III will happen at Hampshire College from Friday, July 14 to Tuesday July 18, 2023 (=7*17*17).
Q: What is planned for YPMD III?
A: We will have conference sessions Saturday–Tuesday that will include both applied and theoretical math talks, alumni talking about their careers, and a panel discussion about the next 3*17 years of the program.
Q: That’s it?
A: Of course not! There will also be many fun things, like an alumni banquet, math movie screenings, the annual alumn v. student ultimate game, tours of the Kern Center, puzzles at Kelly’s house (that is now located across the street from Atkins), and a special exhibit of the Yellow Pig Collection.
Q: …is THAT all?
A: Probably not! There will be many other activities, like a YP shirt creation and repair station, hiking in the local Holyoke Range, and an ice cream social, but as always, you make the event what you want it to be! We have some ideas listed on our schedule, but if you have ideas or want to sponsor an event, please contact us!
Q: Who will be speaking at YPMD III?
A: Many alumni and friends of the program. You can see more details on our schedule.
Q: I’m interested in giving a talk! How do I do that?
A: Please contact us and we’ll squeeze you in.
Q: How much will attending YPMD III cost?
A: Registration fees for the event will be
- $85 for general registration and
- $34 for current students.
These fees are only for attending the conference, and do not include meals or housing. (Those rates are outlined below.) We anticipate that we will be able to offer some subsidies and assistance to those who cannot afford the full fees, especially for younger students. We also expect to be able to offer assistance where needed for housing and meal costs.
Q: Can I stay on-campus?
A: We will have on-campus housing in Merrill B and C. (Merrill C is where alumni of the first >17 summers will remember living.) These dorms are air-conditioned single rooms. A limited number of double rooms may be available, but even if they are not, we can accommodate housing families adjacently. Younger alumni may also be placed in un-air conditioned rooms in Enfield.
On-campus housing will cost $45/night, plus a $30 linen rental fee.
Q: Can I stay off-campus?
A: We have a small number (<17) of rooms reserved at the Comfort Inn Suites in Hadley, MA for those who wish to stay off-campus. The rates vary, but a good estimate is $289/night. Due to other events in the area, there is a two-night minimum. If you would like to stay off-campus, you will pay the hotel directly: use the hotel’s booking site. Rooms are filling up quickly in the area (see below) so booking early would be best.
Q: Can I arrange my own housing?
A: Yes, but you should be aware that there is a lacrosse tournament being held that weekend in Hadley. In previous summers (including YPMD I), this has meant every hotel room in the surrounding area was reserved well in advance. If you seek your own arrangement, we encourage you to do so quickly.
Q: What meal options are there?
A: Dining is available at the Hampshire College dining hall (SAGA) at the following rates:
- $10.50 per breakfast
- $13 per lunch
- $14.50 per dinner
Any meals eaten at Hampshire must be paid in advance (so we can give accurate headcounts to the dining hall). There are a number of local restaurants within a short drive for off-campus dining, plus Atkins Market within walking distance.
Q: You mentioned an alumni banquet earlier. What’s that (and how much does it cost)?
A: Every YPMD, we’ve hosted alumni and friends for a catered banquet in the Red Barn on Hampshire’s campus. We will be holding our banquet on Monday the 17th over dinner. It will cost $51/plate plus a cash bar. We will be able to accommodate most dietary restrictions.
Q: How do I get there?
A: The closest airport to Hampshire College is Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT. There are major bus and train stations in Springfield, MA, as well as a close by train station in Northampton, MA and a bus station in Amherst, MA. We are not able to provide rides ourselves from these hubs, but ride services and taxis are easy from the latter two stops, and we can help facilitate car shares between alumni arriving at similar times. We also cannot subsidize travel for any attendee.
Q: How do I register?
A: Glad you asked, you can now officially register and pay by going to the YPMD III registration form.
Q: Can I share yellow pigs or memories?
A: We have a submission form for yellow pigs, 17s, memories and memorabilia, photos, stories, and testimonials. If you have your own physical yellow pig collection you are interested in loaning for our museum, please contact us.
Q: How can I help?
A: Thanks for asking! Please contact your friends and fellow alumni from your summer(s), share your memories, and share fond wishes to see them again this summer.
If you would like to volunteer to help during the conference (with registration tables, moderating sessions, helping with YP shirts, etc.), please let us know on our Volunteer form. We will be in touch with more information at a later date.
If you are interested in supporting us financially, please donate here or contact us for individual or corporate sponsorship.
Q: I have a question that wasn’t answered on this page.
A: Please contact us, and we’ll try our best to answer it.
